Barcellona design firm HUNCH, which we met at Milan Design Week 2014, presented an interesting project starting from the evolution of value – crafted textiles. The project started with the proposal to explore in depth the loss of tradition in hand crafted textiles due to the industrialization. They tried to develop new expectations and connotations for the the creation of textiles and their meanings. The investigation aims to give back the lost value to the thread, the fabric, their techniques, tools, values and the possibilities that they have. All these concepts are based on work which have on one hand the crafts, using their affordability and their infrastructure, and on the other hand industry, using materials which are not normally used for creating textiles, exploring their possibilities and using their qualities to have the opportunity to create new solutions. This is a research work with the expectations placed on the structural and non-structural properties of materials in confection, and in the exploitation of their qualities and communication claimed through them. The evolution is a wide range of products, even objects that are not usually textiles, made with the HUNCH: lampshades, shoes, bags. Even vases and containers. The possibilities are endless and the exploration has just begun. We’ll wait and see.
