One of our favourite elements of this year’s Fuorisalone/Milan Design Week came, somewhat surprisingly, from Japan. In the Tortona district, Tokyo Design Week had a large space where the best of Japanese design, art, fashion and technology was exhibited. Innovation and tradition were mixed together seamlessly to create an exhibition which was both fascinating and hugely fun, with lots of fully interactive exhibits. There was everything from manga to video games to traditional prints and modern gadgets, and we especially enjoyed getting our faces scanned and inserted into a video game which we could then play with. The theme of the event was simply Tokyo, and the whole event reflected the colourful, creative, hectic nature of the bustling Japanese city. Alongside crazy fashions and lots of bright colours, we found the “Appear, Disappear” installation made of straws by Tama Art University, which allows viewers to either have a clear view through the structure or to not see anything at all, depending on the angle it is viewed from. We also found an impressive projection mapping project which projected images onto a single grain of rice, and some beautiful product design from the likes of Shinya Yoshida, Y.Inc, and Masahiro Yamauchi.
